Mental Health & Well-being

    &

It is important that children are encouraged and supported to look after their mental health & well-being every day just as we do our physical health.

In following of our school rules of being Ready, Respectful and Safe, (and the corresponding 5R values) we want all of our children to be able to recognise, name and be competent in regulating emotions as they arise. In being ‘emotionally literate’ our children will be able to show an understanding of their current state (emotional and physical) and reflect upon how this state will impact upon future responses.  Along with this it is also vital that we engage parents in their understanding and ways in which they can support their child(ren).

Plutchik’s Theory of Emotion sees all emotions as being fluid. Every individual has differing levels of emotion, will respond differently to triggers and return to their personal level of stability in their own time. We need to educate and work alongside all of our children to identify mental health and well-being signs early and provide ways in which they can support themselves and others around them to work proactively to prevent extreme emotions being experienced and displayed.

In support of this development we will:

Emotional awareness

It is healthy to experience a variety of emotions at different times. It is important that we can all explain how we are feeling and, when ready, begin to consider why those feelings arose. In being able to do this, we can personally regulate our emotions to acceptable levels.

We will begin to explore the ‘Zones of Regulation’ across school and within classes look to how we can support ourselves and others to move into the optimal ‘Green zone’ if becoming dysregulated.
